Declutter your closet step by step
- Try Everything On: Make three piles: keep, donate/sell, and don’t fit. If you’re in the middle of a diet, set aside the “doesn’t fit” clothes for a later review. Enjoy your closet review!
- Alterations: Pull out anything that needs a stitch or two.
- Mix and Match: Go through the “keep” pile again, experimenting with combinations. Remove anything that doesn’t work. Be strict.
- Refer to Your Pinterest Board: Use it to find creative ways to style your clothes. You might be surprised at what you already own.
You will be happier living with less things
Don’t Shop Until You Know Your Closet
Challenge yourself to create at least three outfits from every piece you keep. Here are a few examples:
- Black Trousers:
- Black trousers + white shirt + black blazer.
- Black trousers + beige shirt + printed blazer.
- Black trousers + printed shirt + colorful scarf + fun belt + sweater.
- Create unexpected Combinations: Try pairing two prints, like a small floral shirt, with a small-checkered blazer. If the colors align, the result can be both fun and polished.
- Black Trousers:
Are you tired of wearing jeans?
Keep at least one jeans, keep a dark pair that can be worn day or night.
Smart shopping
When you’re ready to shop, think strategically.
- Assess Your Closet: Identify what you truly need. Make a list with two columns:
- Investment Pieces
- Seasonal Fashion
- Stick to the List: Only buy what complements your current wardrobe.
- Adopt the One-In, One-Out Rule: Donate an item for every new one you buy. This keeps your wardrobe manageable and prevents impulse buys. The one-in, one-out has saved me many times! I only buy what I love and when I am ready to discard something.
Color Themes
Choose a few basic colors to make your mix and matching make more sense.

Easy Upgrades
Accessories can transform your outfits instantly:
- Belts
- Scarves
- Statement Bags
- Sweaters Draped Over Shoulders
- Jewelry: Necklaces, earrings, or both.
Even colorful socks and stockings can elevate your look. Nordic socks, for example, are a fun winter accessory.
Vintage Shopping
Get to know the vintage stores in your area. Visit often because they are always getting new things.
ONLY buy items on your list.
Shop with a purpose. Keep the shopping list on your phone to stay focused, and don’t shop randomly.
Only visit stores on sale with your list on hand!

FAQ How to organise and declutter your closet efficiently
How do I start the process of decluttering?
Get four cardboard boxes and label them:
Don’t fit.
Alterations.
Maybe.
Don’t love them but not ready to discard them.
Divide your closet in sections
Divide your closet in section- maybe four sections.
Section 1
Week 1:
Try on all the clothes in section one and place them in there appropriate boxes.
Leave the clothes that you LOVE and that fit you well in the closet.
Section 2
Week 2
Try on all the clothes in section two and place them in there appropriate boxes.
Leave the clothes that you LOVE and that fit you well in the closet.
Section 3
Week 3
Try on all the clothes in section three and place them in there appropriate boxes.
Leave the clothes that you LOVE and that fit you well in the closet
Section 4
Week 4
Try on all the clothes in section four and place them in there appropriate boxes.
Leave the clothes that you LOVE and that fit you well in the closet
Week 5: Don't Fit box
Remove the box and take it to a charity as soon as you finish the decluttering.
Week 5: Alterations box
Take the box “Alterations” to the seamstress.
Week 5: Maybe box
Keep the Maybe box in a different room and don’t open it for one month.
Week 6: Organise
Organize your closet.
Hang your clothes:
Hang all your shits and t-shirts in one section.
Hang the dresses and skirts in the next section.
Hang the trousers.
Hang Coats and jackets.
Hang your belts.
Choose your drawers or shelves for your:
- Underwear and socks
- T-shirts
- Scarves, gloves, accessories.
Week 7: Shoes and bags
Now that you know which clothes are staying it will be easier to decide which shoes and bags you will want to keep and which are ready to go.
Give away the shoes and bags as soon as you decide!
Why declutter weekly rather than in two days?
Declutter and discard slowly so that you have time to try on all your clothes and look closely in the mirror to see how they fit.
For some reason I get tired when I declutter but I feel really energetic when I see the unwanted things in the box.
If you do this process slowly it will be easier for you.
Can I do the process faster if I want?
Yes! You can do it in 3 or 5 days.
BUT:
Do it in section and follow the steps here. They will help you be more efficient.
